KACC offers annual summer program for high school students

To give high school students an opportunity to earn community service experience for honor societies, student council, and scholarship applications, Alvin Community College ’s radio station, KACC 89.7 FM, will offer its annual summer program beginning on June 10.
Designed for high school students who are college-bound, the KACC summer program serves as a registered Community Service Provider for students desiring to help their community through broadcasting on-air public service announcements, participating in public service campaigns and mentoring elementary students.
High school students participating in the summer program will learn the basics of broadcasting, how to write community news and public service announcements, perform on-air and remote broadcasts and assist in the station itself.
The radio station is on-air 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so service hours can be arranged to fit any student’s schedule.  Participants can volunteer as little or as much as they want or even enroll to earn dual or college credit.
Students from all over the area, including Alvin, Pearland, Friendswood, League City, Galveston, and other cities, have been participating in the program each summer for the past seven years.
Though working at a radio station can be an exciting experience, it also provides an invaluable and essential service to the public.
In addition to supplying news and information regarding upcoming events, radio stations are the fundamental link that keeps communication flowing during an emergency situation, such as a weather-related disaster or other threat.
KACC, a 5,600-watt classic and new rock radio station, is an educational laboratory for the Broadcast Communications students at ACC.
